This is a continuing story from
November 7, 2006 - February 11, 2008 regarding the HealthToasters
Toastmaster Club
Elusive
Gilded Gavel
A
story of catch - and release
Updated from news: May 21, 2008
The purpose of the
"Elusive Gilded Gavel" is to encourage clubs to visit one another. By
visiting another club, we meet new Toastmasters, discover different
ways of running meetings, participate and have fun in a new
environment. The HealthToasters
Toastmasters Club captured the Elusive Gilded Gavel from the Discovery Toastmasters
Club on Wednesday January 16, 2008.

This
is the HealthToasters club second gig with the gavel. We were
caretakers for it one year ago. More information about that
initial capture and the purpose of the gavel is below in the archived
story. The story is renewed in 2008 with a visit by a pair of
HealthToasters on January 16 to the Discovery club in Oakdale.
EGG seekers Paul and Duane were surprised that we recaptured the gavel
with only the minimum two members it takes to qualify. We have
made attempts to regain the gavel from other clubs but were outnumbered
by competing clubs. The DiscoveryTM club held the gavel since
December 8. Duane had visited the Discovery club the week
before with plans for a large club contingent but the pirating crew had
to disband for various reasons and needed to regroup for another
attempt.
Dakota
Speakers claim the gavel 2/11
It took four
HealthToasters meetings before our attraction fulfilled its purpose and
pulled Toastmasters from another club for a visit. On February
11, 2008 the Dakota Speakers sent a crew to compete for the gavel and
found their bid uncontested. Jan Sullivan, Joan Reed, Alisha
Janaczak, and Linda Larson journeyed from the Apple Valley club.
They participated in the Table Topics segment of impromptu speaking to
answer questions on the subject of Valentines' Day. We enjoyed
their visit and were ready to let the gavel travel once again.

The
following is archive story information that begins with our original
involvement with the gavel.
The HealthToasters
Toastmasters Club captured the Elusive Gilded Gavel the first time from
the Speakers After Hours

Club on Tuesday November 7, 2006.

Randy Haukom and Duane Noto made the trek from
Bloomington to Eden Prairie, MN to visit the Speakers After Hours. It takes at
least 2 members from a visiting club to take the Gavel from the holder.
There are tie-breakers when more than one club seeks the same prize. It
starts with the count of most people visiting from the same club. The
club with the highest percentage of their membership would be
considered next and then a distance calculation. There is a special
rule that allows a traveler more than 150 miles to trump. Google/maps
indicated this club site 11.5 miles from our meeting place.
The Speakers After Hours club
meets Tuesdays at 6:15 PM. They held the trophy for two weeks. Not only
did Randy and Duane visit the club, they were able to accept role
assignments and participate in the meeting too. Another participating
guest, John Nance, snapped the above picture.

Our first meeting with this prize attraction to visitors was Monday
November 13. We love to have guests. We were looking for clubs to
compete and grab this prize for their club. For more information and
rules visit the district website d6tm.org.
We had three Monday meetings in November and three in December with the
EGG up for grabs before it was captured in our first Meeting of 2007.

On January 8, 2007 five guests from Saturday Morning
Live! came to steal the EGG (Elusive Gilded Gavel) from us. They
participated fully in the meeting, taking on the role of grammarian and
giving three table topics speeches. It was a pleasure to welcome them
as guests and participants. They gave an introduction to their club –
they are a specialty club focusing on evaluations, open to anyone with
a CTM / CC. They invited us to steal back the EGG at one of their
meetings, which are held on the second Saturday of each month in
Woodbury.

The Elusive Gilded Gavel began its journey at the 2005 District 6 Fall
Conference. The Saturday Morning LIVE! club has had the EGG before. Pat
Croal, one of the marauding band, has been the gavel guardian for the
district.

On
January 13, 2007 five guests from Minnesota
Returned Peace Corps Volunteers wrestled the EGG on its first
appearance with a new host since leaving our nest. Within a week, the Real Speakers took it home to
Burnsville on January 18.

On April 16, 2007 HealthToasters sent a band of four
would-be pirates to Burnsville to Real
Speakers. But alas, Word
Masters made the capture with three representatives. How did 3
outnumber 4? They tricked us - they brought a copy of the rules.
Actually, it was a near miss for our club. We accepted defeat with a
3-3 tie when they reported their 3 represented 25% of club membership.
Our 3 members of 27 in HealthToasters
weren't enough for the tie breaker. Our 4th member would have allowed
us to reclaim the scrumptious trophy but arrived after the start of the
meeting, and was therefore ineligible.
Club thanks to the raiders: Randy Haukom, Paul Jackson, John Zimmerman,
and Duane Noto. Better luck next time. The spirit of the
campaign to visit another club was achieved as it was a good meeting
and fun experience.

On September 8, 2007 HealthToasters made another EGG
hunt and once again the elusive gavel eluded us. Maximers five
club members beat the EGG from Jane Densinger and Duane Noto.
The Saturday Morning Live club had their club speech contest for the
fall series and all guests enjoyed the experience.
The HealthToasters club will be
watching the Gavel travels. If your club has it, be ready for our
visit.
