Central Division Contest - April 17
The Central Division contest was April 17 at the Donaldson Company location in Bloomington. There was a terrific turnout and the audience was treated to an excellent exhibition of the skills achieved by practice in Toastmaster clubs. The event was educational and fun. Arlene Gallegos, Central Division Governor, was contest chair and enlisted the Area governors from the division to participate in the contest roles. Our club member and Area 1 Governor Randy Haukom was the Toastmaster for the two contests. There were six contestants in each contest with two individuals participating in both. As it happens, the winners were those two. Congratulations to Bonnie Laabs for 1st place in the evaluation contest and to Mike Lust in the International Speech contest. 2nd place went to the other of these two. 3rd place in the Evaluation was Jay Linnell and Luke Spieglehoff was 3rd in the International speech. The other contestants Don Mathews (Area 1), Kathleen Lepp, Kelly King, Milt Sherburne, Tonia Dockter (area 1), and Harry Ireton also did a fantastic job and really challenged the judges to pick the winners. Club member Duane Noto practiced photography.

District Contest winner visits our club - June 23
The International contest is the only one that continues beyond the District Convention. It has its name because it continues to the Toastmasters International level. The next step beyond the District level is at the Regional Conference. Our Region IV met in Rapid City, SD this year June 26-28. Each contestant MUST change their speech and deliver a completely different one at the Regional level. Our District winner in the International Contest, Anurag Shukla, wished to hone his new speech by delivering it to different clubs. HealthToasters had the honor to have Anurag deliver his Regional level speech to our club on June 23.
About Speech Contests
Speech contests are an important part of the Toastmasters International educational program. Speech contests provide an opportunity for proficient speakers to gain contest experience, and they provide interesting educational programs for members and the public.
They also allow those Toastmasters who are not participating in the contest to learn by observing proficient speakers.
There are two different contests for this 2008 spring season. Each Toastmaster club has their own contest or selection process to choose a representative from the club. Winners advance through the organizational structure of clubs in four steps of a tournament.

AREA 1 - Six clubs in our Area 1 send their club winner to a contest on March 27.
CENTRAL DIVISION - The Area 1 winner competes with winners from the six areas (~29 Clubs) in our Central Division on April 17.
DISTRICT 6 - Winners from the ten Divisions (~271 Clubs) in our District then compete in a weekend conference. The Speech Evaluation Contest is the evening of May 16 and the International Speech Contest is the evening of May 17.
Speech Contest Purpose
- To provide an opportunity for speakers to improve their speaking abilities.
- To provide an opportunity to learn by observing the more proficient speakers who have benefited from their Toastmasters training.
There are two Separate contests and an individual may compete in both.
SPEECH EVALUATION CONTEST (2 to 3 minutes) - To encourage the development of evaluation skills and to recognize the best as encouragement to all.
Each contestant listens to the same speech and then leaves the room. One contestant at a time returns to provide their evaluation.
INTERNATIONAL SPEECH CONTEST (5 to 7 minutes) - To provide an opportunity for speakers to improve their speaking abilities and to recognzie the best as encouragement to all.
International Contestants must have completed at least six manual speeches in the Competent Communication manual prior to the club contest.
